HOW ARE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHANGES AFFECTING YOUR BUSINESS?

The current changes and downturn in the U.S. economy are giving all Americans the opportunity to reevaluate everything right now. We have an opportunity to take a new look at what we value, how we spend our time, what we spend our money on, and even what we believe about why we are here on planet Earth. As people come to new conclusions, develop new goals and lifestyles for themselves and change their spending patterns, businesses and other organizations have an opportunity to respond to the new reality as it is developing. Those who do, coming up with appropriate new products and services, will benefit. Those who wait, who only react to accomplished facts, will lose and may go out of business like other outdated industries of the past.

The economy and our lives will never "go back" to what they were. For many this may elicit fear - a sense of losing control, value, competitive standing or the ability to predict what will happen tomorrow. Instead of living every day trying to hold onto the illusion that our economy is going to become as it was before, I invite you to fully engage in the process of looking carefully at your resources, offerings and mission in the context of what you truly want in your life and for your fellow human beings. Make your decisions based on your heart-based vision for your business, rather than nostalgia for what you wanted at one time in the past.

Try comparing this new experience to being on a slippery slide at the playground. Just like on the playground, this slide does have an end, and that end arrives as a gentle curve where things slow down and you touch the ground again. Our experience with the economy is like that. The end is not a crash; it is just a new plateau and a new ground beneath your feet.

The process of change furthers the necessity for each of us to be accountable for our choices -- to be aware of why we do the things we do. We can make decisions based on what feels right for us as individuals and groups rather than waiting for someone else to take care of things or give us permission to take care of things. We can see this as a time of individual empowerment, a personal and collective journey. We will, in a general sense, continue to see the economic numbers go down and the number of global disasters rise; we will continue to see people raise big questions about the economy and the way that it has been put together before. And collectively and individually we have the opportunity to chart a new course for the future.
